Congress partner organizations will convene RTOs and Industry Consortiums for the proposal of innovative solutions in response to different problems/needs: energy, health, environment, poverty alleviation and Colombian postconflict (among others). Some of the evaluation activities and the announcement of the winners will take place during the Congress.

Solving problems and satisfying needs for the creation of new horizons of a better future through the use of science and technology, is the foundation for these initiatives, and one of WAITRO´s main objectives.

Currently, the opportunities related to the Collaboration Matchmaking Platform are:

1. WAITRO Innovation Award 2016


In line with WAITRO´s objective of enabling the development of action-oriented partnerships for sustainable development, the WAITRO Executive Board has created the “WAITRO Innovation Award 2016”. The Award has been created to reward innovations with significant social or economic impact produced with major contribution from the submitting organization. The WAITRO Executive Board will evaluate the submitted proposals, and select the winners with the assistance of some of the Congress keynote speakers. The prize will be awarded during the WAITRO Biennial Congress closing ceremony with wide publicity to WAITRO stakeholders to illustrate RTOs key contribution to innovation.

This award is a competition open to all WAITRO members besides nonmember Research and Technology Organizations (RTOs)  but in this last case, with a representative already registered to attend the 23rd WAITRO Biennial Congress & General Assembly, to be held next September, 2016, in Medellin (Colombia).

The original initiatives submitted must demonstrate a new significant contribution to the improvement of the quality of life and well-being of a community by leveraging science and technologyThe works submitted must have created a new (for a market or industry) offering (products, services) by leveraging science and technology, which must have already returned value breaking into the market

How to participate

Applications must be submitted in the name of a WAITRO member or in the name of a nonmember RTO, but in this last case, with a representative already registered to attend the 23rd WAITRO Biennial Congress, who will be in charge of defending the innovation, if selected as finalist, during the Evaluation Committee scrutiny (Tuesday, September 27th, 2016).

Promoting Science, Technology and Innovation for Development



This is a comprehensive open call to institutions and individuals in developing and emerging countries around the world. The first phase will begin from the 15th of January to the 11th of March, 2016, focusing on the creation and promotion of partnerships that contribute to sustainable and inclusive development. Institutions and individuals interested in participating must examine the terms and conditions established for the call´s challenges, problems and ideas.

Active participation in this invitation is considered a necessity for the identification of challenges, problems and ideas. All applications must be submitted by the January to the 11th of March, 2016. Challenges, problems and ideas will be selected by Fraunhofer ( and WAITRO ( during the month of March, 2016. The corresponding Call for Solutions and Technology between the Fraunhofer Institutes in Germany will begin in the month of April, 2016. The problem – solution matchmaking, and concrete project proposal building processes will take place during the March – August period (Deadline for project outline: 31st of August, 2016). Project outlines will be presented for the judging process during the WAITRO Congress in Medellín, Colombia (September, 2016, Pre-selected projects will be presented to potential sponsors in October 2016, and selected projects will begin execution in January, 2017.
