MONEY
EXCHANGE

The official currency of Colombia is the Colombian Peso (COP), the vast majority of commercial establishments in Medellín accept credit and debit cards, however, in the streets, for example when taking a taxi, you will be expected to pay with cash. The use of Dollars and other currencies is not common; therefore we recommend you only exchange your money at authorized bureaus.

You can exchange Dollars for Colombian Pesos at the following Airport bureaus:

  • Sudivisa S.A: Shop No.35

In accordance with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs´ regulations, there is a list of nationalities that require a visa to enter Colombia. Arrival at the José María Córdova Airport (Rionegro).

AVIANCAING

 

The Jóse María Córdova International Airport (IATA code: MDE, OACI code SKRG) is located in the municipality of Rionegro (Antioquia) and serves the city of Medellín. The airport is approximately 32 km and 40 minutes from Medellín at 2.137 m.a.s. Upon arrival at the airport you will find ATMs and Currency Exchange Bureaus.

Please be advised that dollars are not accepted in Colombia. The national currency is the Colombian Peso, and you can exchange your money at the airport – Shop No.8 – International Arrivals Zone. You may also exchange money at local bureaus or hotels, which usually offer better rates. Credit cards are widely accepted at commercial establishments, though not for public transport payment.

There are available taxis waiting outside the terminal. The average fare from the airport to the city center of Medellín is of COP$ 60.0000 (aprox. USD$ 20).
